AT&T or Frontier? Why your Inland Empire city matters

Fiber in the Inland Empire is split between two phone companies, and your city decides which one you get.

Decades ago, the region's phone lines were divided between Pacific Bell (now AT&T) and GTE (later Verizon, now Frontier). Each company upgraded its own territory to fiber, so the map still follows those old lines.

What stays the same everywhere

  • Spectrum cable reaches nearly every address in both counties.
  • 5G home internet from T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T Internet Air is widely available.
  • Starlink works almost anywhere with a clear view of the sky.

Fiber or DSL? Ask the right question

Both companies still run older copper DSL on some streets. When you call, ask: "Is fiber available at my address, or only DSL?" DSL is far slower, especially for uploads.

Fiber vs cable vs 5G, briefly

  • Fiber: fastest, most reliable, same speed up and down. Best for home offices and businesses.
  • Cable: fast downloads, slower uploads, available almost everywhere.
  • 5G home: no install and often no contract. Speed depends on signal and time of day. Great as a backup.

Questions people ask

Why can't I get Frontier in Riverside?

Riverside was historically Pacific Bell (now AT&T) territory, so AT&T built the fiber there. Frontier covers only small parts of Riverside.

Is AT&T DSL the same as AT&T Fiber?

No. DSL runs on old copper phone lines and is much slower. Ask whether fiber is available at your address.
